Aftab Alam is a batting all-rounder and a useful right-arm medium-fast bowler. He represented his national side Afghan Cricket Team in all ODI and T20I. He became part of Afghanistan U-19 squad and played the 2010 Under-19 Cricket World Cup and became a leading wicket-taker with 12 for Afghanistan U-19 team.

He as U-19 surprisingly gave astonishing results as his best bowling figure while playing U-19 cricket he took 8/12 against Oman in the 2011 ACC U-19 Elite Cup. Aftab made his first-class cricket debut for his Mis Ainak Region in the 2017–18 Ahmad Shah Abdali 4-day Tournament on November 13, 2017.

He has also represented Speen Ghar Region in the 2018 Ghazi Amanullah Khan Regional One Day Tournament. Aftab made his debut in the Afghanistan Premier League during the inaugural edition for Balkh in September 2018 In April 2019; he was named in Afghanistan’s squad for the 2019 Cricket World Cup.
