The Riverside Ground is home to Durham County Cricket Club. It’s often known as Chester le Street Cricket Ground, Durham Ground and Emirates Riverside (Sponsorship reason). Riverside County Ground, Durham officially hosted its first game of first-class cricket on May 18, 1995, between Durham and Warwickshire.  Ground honoured by its Robson Pavilion’s inauguration by Queen Elizabeth II in 1996. As a part of redevelopment during September 2008 County Durham stand developed including installing permanent floodlights, permanent seating surrounds the entire ground and raised ground capacity to 20000.

In 2001 Riverside Ground hosted triangular series between England, Zimbabwe and West Indies and a One Day International between Pakistan and Australia, the match was abandoned due to heavy rainfall without a ball bowled. First Test match played between England and Zimbabwe on June 5-7, 2003, Riverside Ground hosted six Test matches for England including Zimbabwe in 2003, Bangladesh in 2005, West Indies in 2007 and 2009, Australia in 2013 and Sri Lanka in 2016. Paul Collingwood became the first Durham local player to hit a Test century at Riverside on June 18, 2007, against West Indies.

The first T20 International scheduled at Riverside County Ground on August 20, 2008, between England and South Africa was abandoned due to heavy rain. Riverside County Ground Chester-I-Street renamed “Emirates Durham International Cricket Ground” for sponsorship reasons on June 4, 2010. The ground was renamed in February 2016 from Emirates Durham International Cricket Ground to “Emirates Riverside” and the contract extended till 2022.
